DAY 18 - Custer, South Dakota and Mt. Rushmore
Hello from the happiest patriots in all of USA! Today we got the present of sleeping in till 7 am! We packed up out of our tight quarters the den, outdoor hallway and even the laundry room. At around 7:45 and we ventured out towards Custer, South Dakota. During our first leg we witnessed a summery mix of rain and SNOW, yes SNOW on July 4th! This was a first and suprising site for many of us considering it is JULY! We also enjoyed a hearty breakfast of pop tarts (we had name brand this time!) along with oranges, which always makes the bus smell 100x better! After a long, sleepy 3 hours, we made our first stop at an extravagant gas station called Common Cents. Inside we were met with a mini food court and even a frozen yogurt bar (which many of us enjoyed). Overall it was a quality stop especially because camper Connor Murray (currently writing) gave the restroom a modest rating of 8.9 mainly due to the cleanliness.
After Dallas rushed us out the door so we could make it to our next stop on time, we continued our journey making our next stop at Wally-World! With even more energy from snacks, we had our last stop at the Custer Park. We were given a large amount of time to practice for our dance battle tomorrow to the song 24K by our trips most loved artist, Bruno Mars. After a long 30 min of intense dancing, we were able to grub on some classic American food including but not limited to hot dogs, green beans, Mac and cheese, watermelon, and red, white and blue cookies, this was the true American meal.
Once we ate it all up (thanks sleepy group!!) we hopped on the bus and headed to the amazing Mount Rushmore for a fitting sentiment of Independence Day! After seeing the gorgeous site of our previous patriotic presidents, buying souvenirs, and eating some of Dallas’s favorite ice cream on TWB, we headed to the Custer YMCA where we watched the beautiful firework show put on by the town. Afterwords we headed straight to the extremely warm showers (they were in fact not that warm) and get some much needed rest as we have an early morning tomorrow.
Happy 4th from the happiest of Happys of the great trip 1!!!
